Our Story
Inaugurated in 2007, Oyster Opera stands as India’s first integrated mussel-farming and backwater tourism project, the vision of G. S. Gul, recipient of the National Award from the Government of India. His mission began with a single idea: to uplift the coastal communities of Kerala by combining innovation, livelihood, and sustainable development.
G. S. Gul pioneered mussel farming on coir ropes, a breakthrough that empowered thousands of local families. What started as a modest initiative has grown into a thriving network of over 6,000 farmers, the majority of them women. By 2008–2009, the collective annual production reached 20,000 metric tonnes of mussels, a remarkable example of coastal entrepreneurship transforming lives.

Sustainability & Community
Oyster Opera is more than a resort, it’s a living example of sustainable rural tourism. The project was recognized by the Kerala Tourism Department for its contribution to eco-friendly development and responsible hospitality.
Every day, villagers engage in activities such as mussel and oyster farming, clam collection, and guided boat experiences, all designed to preserve the natural ecosystem while providing dignified livelihoods. Guests can enjoy cruises in mechanized and country boats, coracle rides, canoeing, pedal boating, fun fishing, and both indoor and outdoor games, surrounded by historical landmarks like Bekal Fort and Parassinikadavu Temple.
Through these experiences, Oyster Opera continues to nurture a balance between people and planet, empowering the local community while inviting the world to witness Kerala’s coastal harmony.
